Google buys Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion

Whoa whoa whoa....whao man! What the hell just happened here?!

I'm shocked there were no rumors of this one. I love Goog's tenacity and never ending drive to take over the world. But I didn't even come close to expecting this move. Though it should have been expected. No matter how awesome Android got, Google could not fully compete with Apple's tightly  controlled harmony between hardware and software. Now they have that chance.

I believe Google when it says it wants to keep Android open mobile OS. They value the power of a marketplace that has players like Samsung, HTC, and Sony poring oodles of cash into Android, especially from a marketing perspective. Statements from those companies CEOs mirror this thought of empowerment, though I doubt behind the scenes it's all sunshine and roses. How could you not be at least a little miffed? Especially someone like HTC who solidified Android with their rockstar hardware, including building the hardware for the first 2 "Google Phones".

I guess only time will tell if Google is able to maintain a solid relationship with those companies and leverage Moto's hardware expertise to make more awesome products (though not software, please let Blur die!)

I think what this really does is let Google finally operate at the same level as Apple. They can own the entirety of the Android user experience. Google has shown that when they apply their "Googlyness" to the phone's hardware (G1, Nexus One, Nexus S) the entire experience is elevated to near nirvana.

Oh yeah, Motorola also holds over 17,000 patents, which may come in handy

Here's to hoping.

SmartAR and Globe Powered Display Tech - Blows my mind

Posted by Nick

When augmented reality is done right, it's a pretty great for making an impact a trade show. I have to agree with Engadget's post that AR can be a bit stale with it's jittery performance and really needs this new love given out by Sony. Their SmartAR tech looks to shake up the AR field a bit. Check it out, very impressive stuff:

Also, it's incredible how far people have taken Kinect in such a short period of time. For this round, it's a full 360 degree view of a projected 3D object that can be controlled with in air gestures. My mind is already being flooded with ideas on how to use this tech at a future trade show.

Can't wait to see what people do next.

TV with 7,680 x 4,320 resolution = 16 x HD

That's a whole lot'a pixels there.

I honestly can't wait till we can move out from under the "HDTV" rock we've been living under. In the future, I bet we'll stop caring about the number of pixels on TVs and focus instead on PPI. I hate to admit it, but Apple and their Retina Display did help make this possible future a possible reality.

Android Ice Cream Sammy

It's "Ice Cream Sandwich" actually, but what it means is the next version of Android will be the One To Rule Them All. Yup, it'll work on your phone, TV, and tablet. I'm sure we'll have dishwashers, fridges and dogs with soon. Looks like the perfect treat, just in time for summer! Thanks Google, we love you too.

Android tracks your health and more

This is only exciting to me, not because I work out and will actually be using this, but because I work in the healthcare industry and can see many uses for this in future projects. As Engadget says

CardioQuest app is being shown off, with an exercise bike being able to recognize that it's there. From there, the API has the bike control the game that's shown on the phone. This is totally wild -- the faster he goes, the more the game changes in real-time. Truly wild.

Hey Boss...when are we going to start using this for a game?

The Android Master lays down the Law - Proper timetable for Android updates

Looks like they're tackling this Android fragmentation head on. They've got the big players in the industry on board to standardize when android devices get updated. This goes out to you, the G1 and MyTouch owners stuck with 1.6 builds of Android. Now go buy a new phone and join the future :)
